Motortrend: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! - The Passport isn’t the most affordable model in the segment, but Honda says you get more bang for your buck, given the increase in standard equipment over its competition (Chevrolet Blazer, Ford Edge, Hyundai Santa Fe, Nissan Murano, and Jeep Grand Cherokee). For a five-passenger SUV, the prices might seem too high to some, but only time will tell whether the market is ready for more Passport adventures.

My take: So overall, seems to be very competent balanced vehicle and it’s more about what it can do on the rare occasions you take it off road vs what it will be actually used for. More offroad capability could be achieved by changing tires and wheels I would say, and honestly the new Toyota Rav4 adventure trim should be able to do most if not all the stuff the Passport did in that Utah course. Should be good in rain and snow in any case and that matters more for most people end of the day .

The reviewers all seem impressed, but looks like there are 2 areas where they disagreed - the transmission and steering. IMO this is basically a bigger V6 forester and with the loss of the XT, If I were in the market I would take this over that + the competition mentioned above, except the Jeep grand Cherokee, and I prefer this over even something like the Outback 3.6R . Wish they had the 2.0T 10 speed combo in it but I guess that’s what the Acura RDX is for. Will definitely take an RDX over the passport even if it smaller and more expensive, though.

Honda is really pushing hard on the outdoorsy and rugged image and given the brand name, resale, proven success of the Pilot, I predict this will become the segment leader in no time.

For the money, I’d rather have an RDX A-spec.

Same. But t hat 3.5V6  is really nice though. F amilies might go for more rear passenger and cargo space.

RDX gives you 29.5 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 58.9 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

Passport 41.2 cubic feet of cargo space and w ith the seats down, the Passport’s cargo space expands to 77.9 cubic feet.

Yeah, I am a noted fan of the J-series. I just can’t see myself in anything bigger than the RDX since I don’t have or want kids, and really would only need that much space on rare occasions.

Agreed.  I think this is going to sell extremely well.

I just can’t wrap my head around Honda’s marketing for this. It’ s a mid- sized 5 seater from a company that hasn’t made a good off-road car ...ever(?)...that’ s supposed to be tapped into the active lifestyle culture.

I guess there is a certain practicality in people who need be outside but don’t want an actual off road vehicle for whatever reason but the Pilot is HUGE. 197x79x71 (length/width/height) versus the 4runner 190x76x72...which can be a 3 row vehicle btw.

These people want good economy and not too much vehicle.

They will sell a lot of these, but not in the way they imagine I feel.
